The shining Mississippi

A glorious performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in City Park. Shakespeare sounds pretty good outdoors. :)

"Midsummer..." audience sitting around a little lake for the final act

Our sweet little suite at the Hotel Monteleone: Living Room

: Bedroom

: Bathroom (jacuzzi jets in the tub! Yes!!)

THE JOINT: Best BBQ I've ever had - even better than Pete's Meat in Gwinnett Co.

THE JOINT: The big silver thing's where the magic is added to the meat

THE JOINT: It's worth the wait, guys

We had a quick wander through Lafayette Cemetery in the Garden District

And that wraps up our Year-In-Review, folks! It's been fun remembering, and it's bolstering to realize just how much better this hostel has become since we arrived. We've learned exactly what we needed to learn about hostel management while here, and have managed to really enjoy every second of our time in this bewitching city.

The plan as of right now is to keep working here until December, after which we'll spend the holidays with friends & family. Next year, we hope to move back to South Korea and give teaching ESL another shot. After 2-5 years, we expect to have enough financial means to get our own hostel off the ground (!!). We haven't decided where it will be yet (though that remains our most commonly asked question), but we would like it to be abroad somewhere. We'll do our research and find a spot that needs a new, quality hostel, and we'll keep you informed as this project progresses!

Swag

Best creme brulee I have ever tasted  *mouth waters*  Note the left-over potato-crusted fish in tinfoil. The next day, we said, "let's eat the duck!" "You mean the fish?" "Um... yes, the fish-duck."

I wanted so badly to keep eating, but the stomach was having no more. Adam managed to polish off most of his fantastic bread pudding.

J.O.H.M.: March 2011

This month was absolutely dominated by the Mardi Gras festivities that begin 3 weeks before March 8 and ran strong and wild up to that day ... and beyond! It was definitely stressful, but totally worth it. I'm so happy we had the chance to experience this crazy party NOLA revels in each year.

It was also dominated by BEADS. Beads, beads and more beads. For a month, it was as if the hostel was breeding the cheap, colorful necklaces because they were in EVERY corner, in EVERY room, in EVERY bush and bathroom. We hauled 4 trash bags full of beads to a donation center the end of March - they employ mentally disabled or handicapped persons to clean, sort and resell the beads for the next year.

Other updates I neglected in previous posts:
- We fired the thieving maid end of November, and hired a FABULOUS new housekeeper the beginning of December. Her name is Jess and I knew the moment I met her that she was a keeper. And she is - without a doubt, she's the best housekeeper this hostel has ever seen.
- In February at some point, I began taking weekly violin lessons from a local musician; finally reaching for a long-time desire of mine to play that instrument. As of right now, I'm not playing full pieces of music, just little bits - but I'm slowly slowly slowly getting better!

Hostelsclub has chosen wk, of all times - & in the middle of the business day - to disable my site's back-office for maintenance.

My desk was phoned by a guy who apologized "for being off-topic". Wanted general info about a distant street in NOLA. Told him what I knew.

Whew! , fin! Hostel's still booked right through March, but there's less pressure w/ guests paying $20 per dorm night than $100.

Karaoke night!

Jester baby at Mardi Gras parade

"Muses" parade, first week of Mardi Gras - lots and lots of high heels, as this Krewe was all girls :)

Sign says "$1 per go - $499 cheaper than bail. $5 for ALL DAY." Bathrooms are the tricky part of parade-watching. Lucky for us that St. Charles (main parade route) is only a 7 min walk from hostel!

Mardi Anna!

Mardi Adam!

Rows of "high chairs" for kids to be able to watch the parade over the heads of all the clamorous, drunk adults that will be pushing shamelessly in front of them  ^_^

J.O.H.M.: February 2011

February was a good month for getting my life (somewhat) organized. I started running in the mornings, writing regular blog posts (kinda), studying Italian irregularly and writing letters. I blogged about a beautiful Valentine's day, multiple lazy days off, visits from friends and sheets. Towards the end of the month, we started to get a good feel for the Mardi Gras craziness that was on the way - the hostel was busier than it had ever been, and we were FULL to capacity pretty much every day. I got all glammed up for the Oscar's Awards Night Gala at the Prytania Theater, and won a prize in a costume contest. That was heaps of fun. :) But it's very possible that the best part of the month was when a fabulous guest at the hostel, Susan, persuaded me to join her for a Zumba class. I've been going pretty much EVERY WEEK since then, and loving it immensely - I have a huge grin on my face from the beginning of class all the way to the end, it's so much fun!

ANNA
Woohoo! Just got an email informing us that our hostel's been voted one of the Top Ten hostels in the USA!!

The roofers are fixing this leaky hostel roof, but closing up the "skylight" in our loft in the process. It was just a hole in our bedroom ceiling, but I'm gonna miss that tiny piece of sunlight. :'(

I have no idea why, but "Wonder Wall" is w/o doubt the favorite song for hostel guests to all sing together. Never fails.

I can understand wetting the bed (sort of, if you're as drunk as our guests), but how do you wet an ENTIRE DOUBLE BED? The whole thing was soaked.

Finer points of the Israel-Palestine issue should not be debated when all parties involved are intoxicated. My 2 cents.

J.O.H.M.: January 2011

January was COLD! Adam and I began to like spending time in our little attic-room for the first time ever, because of all the heat that would get trapped up there. :)  The best part of this month was a two-days-in-a-row vacation, when Adam and I stayed in a beautiful bed and breakfast on St. Charles Avenue. It was exquisite and we had a full night on the town before crashing into our (gorgeous) antique bed and sleeping in the next morning - something that's hard for us to do together, normally. There were also some sniffly noses, Adam began taking Krav Maga classes, we enjoyed a slight lull in the stress of holiday busy-ness while still keeping all the hostel's beds full, and we had a couple of encounters with some really TRULY craaaaaayyyyyzzyyy guests (note the mention of a bi-polar girl in tweet below... She ended up in the psychiatric ward in downtown NOLA!). Ahh, the joys of hostel management!

 ADAM
was fine. New Years morning wasn't. I got woken up by a guest w/ an air horn in his room at 3AM. AN AIR HORN.

Adam's Krav Maga classes are across the Mississippi, so he scoots across on the Algiers ferry 3 times a week - this is view of NOLA from across the river

We received our first award from Hostelworld! We've been rated as one of the top 10 hostels in the USA for the past 7 months! Yay!

**I would just like to note that I am apparently not only terrible at remembering specifics from the past, I've also turned into a fairly bad historian of my own life. I know I had visits from a LOT of wonderful people...but I have to confess that I have a terrible, ominous feeling that I'm forgetting to mention someone's visit in here. Please don't be offended if you're reading these blogs. Any visit omissions were completely unintentional. It's possible I have a case of early Alzheimer's - though it's more likely that my brain is just lazy (*Rachel!* When did you come? December? And didn't we take photos while you were her??).  **
